In my case, I was lucky and they waived the charge. I thanked him anyway (my fault, I suppose, that I didn't think to back up first). Got it working - but not before, under his guidance, I'd deleted my old btinternet account from Mail - which lost me around five years' worth of historic mail deleted from my hard drive (at least the previous twelve months did download back into my inbox from the online POP mailbox). One good-willed adviser had a go with me anyway. However, their advisers (in Delhi, or wherever the call centre is), are not trained to interface with Mac Mail.

Turns out they've set up new POP servers - and they recommend Mac Mail customers to move to these. I contacted BT about this - especially since they have announced changes to the mail account.

But then, after a day or two, you hit the same problem of refused passwords all over again. Next day, it's working again as if nothing was ever wrong. But (now we've got to May 2013) the IMAP servers have been troublesome for months for every Mac user I know who uses Mac's Mail app with a btinternet mailbox: the Yahoo mail server keeps refusing to accept passwords from Mac Mail - so you can wind up typing in your password dozens of times before giving up irate. Perhaps IMAP was a sound alternative back then - though the server-syncing thing always struck me as annoyingly idiosyncratic compared to the good old traditional POP protocol. I don't know what the state of play was a year or two ago. Correct POP3 settings to end this BTInternet IMAP nightmare
